SubstrateÕlayer interface of amorphous-carbon hard coatings

چکیده
A combined study of the crystalline structure, the chemical interaction, and diffusion processes of the substrate/layer interface of amorphous-carbon hard coatings is presented. The structure of the coatings and their gradient layer interface to a chromium buffer layer has been investigated on two substrates @Si~100! and tool steel# using x-ray diffraction ~XRD!. Chemical interaction and diffusion processes at the interfaces and within the layers were analyzed by Auger electron spectroscopy and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy depth profiles. The chromium buffer layer revealed similar textured structure on both substrates. The subsequent gradient layer was determined ~within XRD limits! to be amorphous and composed of an amorphous-carbon and chromium-carbide composite. The chromium carbide maintains the same stoichiometry (Cr3C2), regardless of the gradually changing chromium content. No large-scale interdiffusion was measured, either between or within the layers. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-8979~00!01016-1#

Deformation of Ultra-Thin Diamond-Like Carbon Coatings Under Combined Loading on a Magnetic Recording Head
Ultra-thin diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings are used in precision engineering applications, such as magnetic storage devices, to protect intricate structures from wear and corrosion. A DLC coating typically consists of hard amorphous carbon in combination with an interlayer such as silicon (Si), to improve adhesion to the substrate material. Deformation and delamination of these coatings, eve...

This review summarizes our most recent ndings in the structure and properties of amorphous and crystalline carbon nitride coatings, synthesized by reactive magnetron sputtering. By careful control of the plasma conditions via proper choice of process parameters such as substrate bias, target power and gas pressure, one can precisely control lm structure and properties. With this approach, we we...
متن کاملEffect of morphology and nonbounded interface on dielectric properties of plasma sprayed BaTiO3 Coating
In this research, BaTiO3 thick deposit has been successfully sprayed by air plasma spray. The microstructure and dielectric properties of thick films were investigated by secondary electron microscopy (SEM) and LCR meter respectively. XRD measurement was carried out on plasma sprayed BaTiO3. The results illustrate differences in the crystal structure between plasma sprayed coatings and feed sto...

A broad array of carbon-based thin films, such as diamond, diamond-like carbon (DLC), and others, have been developed over the last several years [1]. These materials exhibit high strength and stiffness, low friction and wear, tolerance to withstand harsh physical and chemical conditions, and can form smooth, continuous, conformal coatings. This has resulted in their use in a wide range of appl...

One of the setbacks of vascular stents is the potential development of a thick-smooth muscle tissue inside the lumen, which can be so severe as to re-occlude the vessel lumen leading to restenosis. Considerable improvements have been made, including the use of more bio-compatible materials, anti-inflammatory drug-eluting stents, re-sorbable stents, and now plasma coatings are being recognised a...
